2000 Annual Meeting

Roanoke, VA

Welcome Message from the Co-Chairs of Local Arrangements

Roanoke, Virginia
October 18-21, 2000

MAC 2000 will be a very special mix of old and new as we change centuries in the "Star City of the South", Roanoke, Virginia. The meeting will be held at the Hotel Roanoke, built in the late 19th Century for the Norfolk & Western Railroad. It is one of the elegant "grand-dame" hotels from that era and was extensively renovated in the late-1980's and early-1990's. The Conference Center facilities are state-of-the-art. One of the nicest features is the "rolling break" which features wonderful food, evolving through the day, from breakfast (starting at 7 am) to late afternoon munchies (ends about 4 pm). The hotel is managed by Doubletree and each person checking into the hotel receives a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie as a welcome. Check out the Hotel Roanoke and its facilities at http://www.hotelroanoke.com/.

The opening reception for MAC 2000 will be at the Science Museum of Western Virginia and will include a 45-minute planetarium show.

Dine-arounds will provide ample opportunity to sample a wide variety of interesting restaurants, some offering unique ethnic cuisine.

Just across the Market Bridge is Downtown Roanoke which features many interesting shops, restaurants, and Center in the Square featuring the Mill Mountain Playhouse and the Science Museum of Western Virginia including the Hopkins Planetarium.

Visit the Farmers' Market with its myriad of fruits and vegetables, plants, and small shops. The Railroad Walk links downtown Roanoke with the Transportation Museum with a safe walk along the railroad tracks. To find out about these and many other attractions, visit the Roanoke Valley Convention and Visitors Center on the Web at http://www.visitroanokeva.com/.

Overlooking the city is Mill Mountain with its huge neon star, which gives the city its nickname. Join us in Roanoke for MAC 2000 as we welcome a new millennium with a special mix of past, present, and future.
