Horse and Cowboy

Abstract:
This powerful training program focuses on the fundamental interpersonal skills and practices necessary to establish relationships based on mutual trust and respect. Leaders at all levels will discover specific techniques and strategies to:

  • effectively communicate;
  • establish shared understandings of goals and expectations;
  • gain commitment and increase motivation;
  • build trust and gain respect;
  • develop meaningful partnerships with employees, colleagues, and customers.

Some dynamic applications for improving the quality of personal relationships can be gained by observing the powerful interaction between a horse and a cowboy.

The first day of the program, facilitated by Ian Lord, involves participants watching Louis Wood work with a horse at his ranch in Waynesboro, Virginia. They are given guidelines and a workbook to help them document their observations as Louis communicates with the horse and begins to develop the relationship that is so critical to his success. Typically, the first day begins at 9:00am and ends at approximately 4:30pm, including a break for lunch.

On the second day, participants meet with Ian Lord in a classroom setting to assess and analyze what they observed on the first day - and to consider applications to their workplace. The class will convene at 9:00am and continue until 12:30pm.

PENDING

Abstract:
Want to learn to love licensing? That might not be possible, but you can learn to make friends with it. This course is designed to reinforce what you already know to include and avoid in a license, provide you with samples of checklists and guides to keep you on track throughout the licensing process, and inform about current best practices in negotiations. We'll discuss key areas determined by contracts (users' rights, confidentiality, archiving, ILL, etc.), and look at policy options your institution might choose in order to position themselves more favorably with publishers. The workshop is designed around small group work, hands on licensing practice, and discussion. After completing the course, participants will have a set of tools to use in reviewing and evaluating licenses, a sense of what peer institutions are doing, and a network of colleagues to consult.

Abstract:
With a hands-on approach, this class will show attendees how to use the features of PubMed and NLM's Gateway products effectively. Attendees will also be able to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the "LinkOut" feature. The class will be online and hands-on. The instructor will demonstrate online searches using both systems; and students, at computers connected to the Internet, will be invited to follow along. Time for individual practice will be provided. Examples of search strategies appropriate for hospital, academic, and special libraries will illustrate the need for utilization of both systems.

Abstract:
Marketing is awareness and response: Awareness of the world from the customer's point of view and then responding with changes in service and communication. Learn how to improve your influence with middle and upper management, use marketing to create a strategic plan, bring in new (and "lost") customers (both internal and external to your institution), collect and evaluate quantitative and descriptive data and improve the effectiveness of promotional activities, even if you are a solo librarian. You will create a marketing project and present the results to your colleagues.
