Create a dynamic organizational structure for MAC in order to fulfill its new vision and mission and to effectively respond to member expectations.
- The Executive Board will establish a task force to address issues and investigate MAC's organizational structure.
- The Chapter Council Representatives will:
- Monitor trends and changes going on in MLA by attending the annual MLA meeting, participating in electronic exchanges such as a the Chapter Council listserv, and reporting back to the MAC members via the MAC listserv, at MAC board meetings and at the annual MAC meeting.
- Bring questions and concerns of MAC members to MLA Chapter Council for guidance. Solicit responses to MLA trends and changes and questions concerning MAC members at the annual MAC meeting, via the MAC listserv, and at MAC board meetings. Report member issues and concerns to MLA Chapter Council via the listserv, at the annual meeting, or by other appropriate methods.
- The MAC Publications Committee will:
- Assess the effectiveness and usability of the MAC Web page, the listserv, and MAC Messages. Report to the board.
- Complete the revision of the policy and procedure manual including adding a planning calendar.
- Review the need for a membership brochure. Revise as necessary. Make available on the Web and in print.
- The MAC Nominating Committee will develop a slate of candidates for Chair and secretary that will provide dynamic leadership to the MAC organization.
Contribute to the individual and professional knowledge base of health information services.
- MAC representatives to various program and LAC committees will work in conjunction with other participating associations to plan the 2003 joint meeting to be held in Philadelphia, PA.
- The Professional Development Committee will:
- Communicate with the members to determine their views of the kinds of professional development opportunities they would like to see offered in the region.
- Keep the MAC Web page up-to-date with course offerings.
- Work with the CE Planning committee for the 2003 joint meeting to offer the best CE classes available.
- Publicize the MAC/MLA student internship to all library schools in the region.
- The Chapter Council Representatives will encourage MAC members to take advantage of CE opportunities at both the MAC and MLA Annual Meetings.
Monitor and respond to changes in the health information profession and health care environment.
- The Chapter Council Representatives will:
- Encourage MAC members to join MLA.
- Encourage MAC members to become members of the Academy of Health Information Professionals.
Promote and publicize the value of health information professionals.
- The Membership Committee will:
- Create a videostream explaining what medical librarians do in hospital, academic and special library settings.
- Send emails to doctors/hospital administration highlighting MAC members in their area, i.e., who they are, where they work, what they do.
- "Media Blitz" by sending promotional brochures such as "Medical Librarians Rock" to big city/county libraries such as Charlotte/Mecklenberg, NC; Richmond, VA., etc. to place in career area.
- The Honors and Awards Committee will:
- Continue to honor MAC members at the annual meeting in October by:
- Promoting nominations, selecting award winners, and presenting awards for the Marguerite Abel Service Recognition Award, MAC Librarian of the Year Award and the One-Person Library Recognition Award.
- Recognizing AHIP members and CE instructors.
- Recognizing out-going elected officers, committee chairs, committee members, and other appointed positions.
- Recognize MAC librarians who have retired during the past year or who are about to retire.
- Investigate and implement other methods of recognition. These include:
- Publishing articles in MAC Messages about MAC librarians' accomplishments.
- Work with each state's reporter to learn of activities that should be recognized.
- Attend state meetings to solicit ideas for the recognition of MAC librarians.
- The Chapter Council Representatives will:
- Take advantage of materials developed by MLA to promote the health information professional and National Medical Librarians Month.
- Report MLA efforts to promote our profession to MAC members.
- Share MAC's efforts to promote our profession with the Chapter Council.
Address the need for recruitment and retention of a knowledgeable and diverse work force.
- The Chapter Council Representatives will encourage MAC members to attend programs sponsored by Chapter Council, such as the Mentoring Program being offered in San Diego in 2003.
- The Membership Committee will:
- Target library school students and other professionals who may be interested in a career in health librarianship by sending them mailings and emails inviting them to upcoming workshops and events within the MAC region.
- MAC members who work in academic libraries on campuses with library schools will meet and discuss medical librarianship with library school students. Create a mentoring program for library school students who are interested in medical librarianship:
- Compile a list of names, job titles and emails of MAC members who may be interested and available to be contacted by current students.
- Encourage new members to become active as soon as possible once in the organization. Active members tend to stay in the profession longer than inactive.
- Listen to the needs of new members and learn what they are facing in today's workplace.
- Send promotional materials to high schools and college career centers.
- The Professional Development Committee will support MLA's Task Force to Plan Recruitment of the 21st Century Workforce of Health Information Professionals.
