Congratulations to MAC Award Winners
By Patricia Vaughn, Honors & Awards Committee Chair

At the October MAC Annual Meeting (QuintEssential Conference) held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, three members of MAC were honored. These MAC librarians were nominated by their fellow librarians for their achievements in their profession and for service to MAC.

Paula Raimondo, from the University of Maryland Health Sciences Library in Baltimore, was awarded the Marguerite Abel Service Recognition Award. Paula has been very involved with the MAC organization since the early 1980's. She has served as MAC secretary, Chapter Council Alternative and Chapter Council Representative. Paula has been involved in numerous committee projects and has been an active representative of MAC at the MLA level. She has worked both as an AHIP coordinator and counselor.

Monique Mackey, from the Area L AHEC, Rocky Mount, North Carolina was awarded the One Person Library Recognition Award. Monique is an outreach librarian who has also been actively involved in the Association of North Carolina Health Sciences Libraries (ANCHSL). She recently completed a term as president of ANCHSL. She has also provided leadership support with the Spanish language and Cultural Training Initiative Website, serving on several statewide committees and advocating for better health care for North Carolina's Latino population.

Gabe Rios, from the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library, UVa in Charlottesville, Virginia, was awarded the MAC Librarian of the Year Award. Gabe has been a key contributor to the profession for many years. He has served on the program committee for the MAC 2000 meeting, coordinated paper sessions and was a co-coordinator for the 50th Anniversary MAC/MLA presentation. Gabe is currently a member of MLA's National Program Committee 2004. Gabe is an expert on the use of PDAs in the medical environment. He has also taken a leading role on HIPAA. Because of Gabe's leadership skills he has recently been accepted as a participant in the 2003-2004 NLM/AAHSL Leaders Fellows Programs.
