District of Columbia

Don Martin is the new medical librarian at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, MD. Previously Don worked at the Transportation Research Board of the National Academy of Sciences. We welcome him to the health sciences community.

The Medical and Family Libraries at Children's Hospital National Medical Center have received a $47,350 NLM Information Systems grant to fully automate library operations and services and to provide Internet access to professional and consumer health information literature. Debbie Gilbert is the Library Director at Children's.

Laura Abate, Reference Librarian, Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library gave a presentation entitled "Past, Present and Future - Continuing Evolution of the Medical Informatics Curriculum at The George Washington University" during the MLA 2001 meeting.

Christine (Tina) Raney will become the new Serials Librarian at Himmelfarb on 7/16/01. Susan Leister left Himmelfarb after 10 years; she re-located to Houston and is now a Cataloger at Rice University. She held multiple positions at Himmelfarb.


Maryland

Frieda Weise and M.J. Tooey (of the University of Maryland Health Sciences and Human Services Library) authored an article entitled "Planning for Health Library Facilities" in: Foresman, R. ed. Administration and Management of Health Sciences Libraries: Current Practice in Health Sciences Librarianship, vol. 8. Edited by Alison Bunting, Metuchen, NJ: Medical Library Association and Scarecrow Press, 2000, pp. 133-172. M.J. also presented a talk on May 14, 2001 at the Good Samaritan Hospital entitled "The Myth of Free Web-based Information."

Maryland medical librarians who presented a paper or poster session at MLA in Orlando include: Ina Alterman, Beverly Gresehover, Patty Hinegardner, Beth Jacoby, Alexa Mayo and Jane Murray.

Patty Hinegardner and Cynthia Phyillaier also of the University of Maryland Health Sciences and Human Services Library co authored two papers with C. Romano: "Some guidelines for Browsing the Internet," and "Consumer Health Resources on the Internet" in Fitzpatrick, J., Montgomery, KS, eds. Internet Resources for Nurses. Springer. New York, NY: Springer Publishing Company, 2000, pp. 17-29 and pp. 133-172.


North Carolina

Congratulations! Jacqueline Ramseur has been appointed Director of Library Services at CaroMont Health, Gaston Memorial Hospital.


West Virginia

Michael Schott, Director, HSL, WVU - Charleston Division, has had an article accepted for publication. "Specialty of the House: Notes from Morning Report: A Hospital Librarian on the Bleeding Edge of Medicine" will be published in the Journal of Hospital Librarianship. Congratulations, Michael. Grace Gmeindl has replaced Paula McGrew as librarian at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg, WV. You may reach Grace at gmeindlg@uhcwv.org.

Virginia Bender, Sean Murphy, and Jean Siebert, West Virginia University/HSL librarians, attended MLA 2001 in Orlando, FL, May 27-30 . Those librarians along with Sally Brown attended the teleconference Emerging Technologies: New Roles for Librarians and Information Providers co-sponsored by the Western Maryland AHEC, the University of South Carolina, and the West Virginia Library Association held in Wheeling, WV on 6/7/01.

Kelley Rice, Circulation supervisor at WVU Health Sciences Library, has had her paper "Using Electronic Tools/Resources to Train Student Workers" accepted for presentation at the Mid-Atlantic Chapter/Medical Library Association annual meeting in Ocean City, MD, October 17-20, 2001.
