Message from the Chair
By Jonathan Lord, MAC Chair

My message to MAC members that was begun before the terrible events of September 11th now rests in the recycle bin. Words that adequately express the feelings of sorrow and shock we all are experiencing are hard to find. Certainly our thoughts and prayers are for any MAC members in DC, Virginia and Maryland who were directly affected by the tragic events of Tuesday, September 11th. In the days ahead, let us lend our support to one another in any way we can, whether it be donating blood, making a donation to the American Red Cross or one of the many other relief organizations giving aid to victims and survivors, or hugging a colleague in need.

I hope to see many of you at our annual meeting next month in Ocean City, Maryland. The MAC Executive Board met here in Charlottesville, Virginia on September 7th. We reviewed the results of the needs assessment survey that was conducted earlier in the year. These results will be presented at the business meeting in Ocean City, and subsequently published on the MAC Website. We also reviewed goals and objectives for our chapter for the coming year, and these too will be presented at the annual business meeting.

The MAC Executive Board voted to pursue planning for a joint annual chapter meeting with the Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and New York-New Jersey MLA chapters in 2003. The Board has asked me to act as the MAC liaison at upcoming planning meetings with the three other chapters, which I will do after I step down as Chair at our annual meeting in Ocean City.

All of the MAC standing committees are still in need of new members. If you haven't already responded to my call for volunteers in the last issue of MAC Messages, please do so now so that the business of the chapter can go forward in the coming year. Thanks in advance for you willingness to give your time and effort in support of MAC.

Jonathan Lord
MAC Chair
