Honors and Awards 2001 The Honors and Awards Committee congratulates the winners of the 2001 MAC Awards. Lynne Eades of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, Health Sciences Library received the Marguerite Abel Service Recognition Award for service to MAC. As her nomination stated "Lynn is one of those people who willingly serves the needs of MAC members and helps keep the organization functioning smoothly. She is aware of how MAC operates and lends her support at every available opportunity." She currently serves as Membership Database Manager an "exofficio" role, which means she does not always receive recognition for this tremendous service to MAC Members. We hope we have rectified that. Lynn is our first Abel Service Award winner to receive the newly established monetary component of the award established this fall through a donation by Marguerite Abel and matched by MAC. The fund ensures that future Abel Award winners will continue to receive significant reward for their service contribution to MAC. Mary Alice Sherrard, solo librarian at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County, Virginia received the MAC One Person Library Recognition Award for 2001. Mary Alice has served her hospital's physicians and staff for twenty years. She extended library services beyond information for the medical staff to include nursing, allied health, hospital administration, and consumers. She maintained services for her patrons during a lengthy library renovation from 1999-2000. Mary Alice has also been active professionally throughout her career. Most recently she served as Co-Chair of the Local Arrangements Committee for the very successful MAC 2000 Meeting in Roanoke. Our MAC Librarian of the Year for 2001 is Janice Kelly. Janice has a long history of service to MAC and an outstanding record of contributions in health sciences librarianship. She recently served as Chair of the Honors and Awards committee after two previous years of membership on that committee. She served as Chair Elect of MAC and in that office also served as Chair of the Program Committee for the MAC 2001 Meeting. As her nominator said, it seems very appropriate that Janice receive this award, as she becomes MAC Chair. Janice has served as Executive Director for the Southeastern/Atlantic Region of NN/LM since 1994. In this position she has had tremendous impact on MAC members. She connects small and large libraries so that they can share resources. She supports programs that fund library outreach to consumer and unaffiliated health professionals. She manages the RML staff and oversees day-to-day operations as well as travels throughout the region. Janice values her connections to health science information professionals as we throughout the MAC Region also value her. Following the presentations of the previously discussed awards at the MAC Honors And Awards Banquet, on October 18 in Ocean City Maryland, certificates of appreciation were distributed to officers and committee members who had served the MAC organization in many different capacities throughout the one or two-year period of designated service for their assignments. AHIP counselors, MLA Officers and Board Members, new MAC members and retirees were also recognized for their service. Our Honors and Award Banquet was truly a gala event this year with excellent food and an emcee of regional renown, our own MAC Chair of 2001, Jonathan Lord. Jonathan and the MAC Board graciously consented to an addition to the Awards agenda. He did however note during the evening that they consented, but did not necessarily "condone" the categories or selections. This new addition to the award night was designated the "Fun Awards". We received many positive comments from attending MAC members indicating that they really enjoyed this new segment and hoped it would continue to be included at future MAC awards banquets.
