Ilene Smith Retires
By Rebecca M. Johnson, Honors and Awards Committee

Ilene Smith, Director of the Virginia Funkhouser Health Sciences Library at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Virginia retires April 30, 2003.

In 1972 Ms. Smith was hired under two grants from NLM to upgrade the Nursing and Doctors' libraries at the hospital. Through her efforts during a span of thirty years, the library grew from 600 to 3500 square feet; from a collection of several hundred outdated books and a dozen journals to an organized automated collection of over 5,000 books and audiovisuals and 240 print journals. Ms. Smith, who is quite active in MAC and VOCAHSL, received the MAC Librarian of the Year award in 2002. She is a graduate of Emory University School of Library Science.
